Layered Fragments, Becoming Whole

If you ever read this, our leaves are in the wind

When I close my eyes
I see you smiling
beckoning him towards you
with the best love in your eyes
I've never been more proud of you
And us for creating him together
A dreamy love story…

The missing piece
sits between us as it always has
Like a liquid wall, glossy and sheer
Both aware of its existence,
unsure how to reach through
I tend to trace my heart along the hidden edges
Testing for an opening, stirring the pain
A decade in,
it still holds firm
We've tried
And I'm sure we'll try a g a i n

So we drift a p a r t
Like passing ships
Reaching different destinations
Who harbored together in some distant past
The waves roll in, keeping us inland
Anchored
r u s t
forming from the once playful spray of sea water
Melancholic time

My hand brushes against steel
warm from the setting sun
holding on to memories
Echoing in the wind
As our separate lives
move forward
With our eyes looking
p a s t
the orange glow of the horizon
Standing here
side by side
