Layered Fragments, Becoming Whole

Half Measures

A fire in the woods

to keep warm, at first

two missing mobile
homes found
in a devastating way

We smile, settle
into one another
cheeks blooming pink
turned
ruddy from the burn
our eyes mesmerized by orange
dancing light
around dry branches,
twigs, l e a v e s

the air wet from rain
yesterday's

steam rises
as the flame crackles

spits
beat of our vibration
And we stayed
seated across
in silence
our bodies pull to be closer

no one moved
our heartbeats in sync
eyelids pressed closed
afraid
as much as it felt complete
tears
stained cheeks
everlasting

the moon blurred into the sun
through days
gravity pressed onto our shoulders

lulling into the forest floor
until the fire turned
feather ash

I stood up

it's time to go.
