Layered Fragments, Becoming Whole

Strawberry ice cream
melts into waffle cone
napkin rushes to catch the drip

I took it as my companion
to wander
Central Park East

A breeze lifts my half cap sleeves
mini floaties, whimsy allowed
the hour at its gentlest
before the rush

I walked
under that one bridge
to Wollman Rink
sat on a bench
ate my ice cream
increments of rough cat tongue licks
reach for the cowlick droop
people-watching
bikers in neon pass
gaudy carriages
pulled a string in me

broken horse eyes
linger deep
hooves in a steady gait

I look down to find
a sticky, fruity mess
