Layered Fragments, Becoming Whole

Angel Oak
expansive in full view
my chest thumped
fastened to your roots
growing from the depths
ancient arms become
saddles for children
on a band of horses
or wolves caught mid stride
for war
leaves extend to reach branches
covering
the hearth, the sun
South Carolina

Today, I reach for you
leaning deep against your trunk
my eyes closed
as my thoughts lift
iridescent heat waves
pouring into you
live, tune

my breath hitches
on your rough bark
wrapped in the dance
of wind and leaves
rising
up
and up
dissipating into translucent
spores

where are my roots?
