In 30 years
as the golden sun
sets sail on an autumn day
we gaze with clear eyes
side by side
on the lives we’ve built
separately
count on our fingers the odds
we’ve lost from the moment
of our births
the way time hovered
in excitement
chasing phantom embraces
s p a n n i n g across a body of land
sunny palms swayed
to the beat of Hollywood’s drums
falling
to blazing lights of skyscrapers
packed tight with bodies
and the silver disco ball drops
on New Year’s Eve
New York City
in between
we settled under our quilt
covering our once bouncing knees
fingers intertwined
as wispy smiles curve
on our lips
gazing at the ocean
only we share
